Opened in the early thirties it was originally only 9 holes and was designed and J Naven and built by Frank Eyles. In 1948 Al Mandy then designed and built an additional 9 holes and it became know as one of the most pleasant courses to play along the coast when playing golf in South Africa. Southbroom is a short course measuring 5564 metres and has a par of 72 but this does not detract from the beautiful surrounds which the course has been constructed in. The course meanders through the village of Southbroom its fairways are lined by tropical bush and there are holes which take you right up the edge of the ocean, the most talked about of these is the 4th where you tee off literally on the rocks overlooking the beach. The course has many challenging holes and there are many indigenous trees and bush, bunkers and water hazards to be negotiated but they do help to shelter the golfer from the coastal winds which is quite previlant when playing coastal golf in South Africa. Southwood has long been a popular course for holiday makers coming to play their golf in South Africa and with its welcoming staff and relaxed atmosphere the golfer will have an enjoyable day. There are 2 bars and a lounge in the impressive clubhouse which provides fantastic panoramic views of course and the Indian Ocean and gives opportunities of seeing Dolphins and Whales when enjoying lunch on the veranda and covered patio. Named 63rd in the top 100 courses in the world by golf digest in 2005 makes it a must to play this charming golf course during your Tee Times golf in South Africa break.
