Golfing Breaks in Morocco
Over the years Morocco golf holidays have become very popular and many more people are visiting to enjoy a golf holiday with a difference. One of the key reasons that golf has become popular here, is that King Hassan II was an internationally ranked student of the ancient game. Because of his interest, golf found its roots and culture within this fabulous country and with Morocco’s spectacular landscape some wonderful golf courses have been created by many world class golf course architects.

Tee Times have picked the Marrakech area of Morocco to delight its golfing clients, after being contacted by the Morocco Unlimited company who are keen to further promote golf in this area.
Tee Times have selected 4 great hotels and 3 wonderful golf courses for its clients who wish to travel a little further a field for their golfing experience and we believe that they won’t be disappointed. The Marrakech area of Morocco presents the golfer with one of the most incredible and exotic destinations you could imagine for enjoying a golf holiday. Being the cultural heart of Morocco visitors to Marrakech will be treated to a city full of passion and energy and with its magnificent architecture, vast palm oases and magical souks, it remains, even today, a most intriguing place to visit during your golf holiday.

To the west of the city, you will find the Atlantic coast and the pretty port of Essaouira and behind the city, soar the high Atlas Mountains, named after the mythological giant who was condemned by Zeus to hold up the sky at the edge of the world. This mountainous region is unlike any other in Morocco. It is remote and isolated and often cut off by winter snow and the small Berber villages are mostly inhabited by sheep farmers who make a meagre living in often harsh conditions.

Although these areas are relatively untouched by tourism, if you do decide to take a visit, you will find these people incredibly open and friendly.
Marrakech was built in the 11th century by the Almoravid Berbers, as a base for their rampaging conquests into Europe and eastern Africa. Even today it is the gateway to the immense continent to the south. If you decide to take a Tee Times golf break to Marrakech we would recommend spending some time in the city.  In the Djemaa El Fna which is a huge square in the heart of the city, you will find acrobats, musicians, snake charmers and jugglers and this amazing square remains the last great informal circus in the world. The name Djemaa El Fna means assembly of the dead, as some claim in the 13th century the square was used for the execution of criminals. For the best view of the chaos in the square find a table on the terraces of either Café de la place or the Café Glacier.

The ideal time to visit the square is around sunset when it becomes a giant open air restaurant.
During your golf holiday the must see places of Marrakech are almost too many to mention but make sure you take a look at the elegant tower of Koutoubia, which takes its name from the 12th century booksellers and binders, who used to gather at its base and the Medina, with its colourful and chaotic maze of streets and courtyards, where you will find traditional arts and crafts with a typical African flavour. More must see places are the Medersa and Mosquee Ben Youssef which were begun by the Merenids in the 14th century. The college was once the largest in Morocco housing 900 students. Nearby stands the Koubba Ba Adiyn, which dates back to the 12th century, and is the sole surviving monument of the Almoravid Berbers, the city’s builders. This small domed shrine is stunning in its simplicity and its shapes and forms are mirrored throughout Morocco.

Marrakech
is a city full of palaces, gardens and ramparts. The palaces of Palais El Badia and Palais de la Bahia are sadly in a ruined state but remain fascinating places to visit and there is enough to explore for golfer come historian. The gardens of the seductive Jardin Majorelle, which were bought by the famous designer Yves Saint Laurent, and the Jardin de la Menara, which is the city’s largest garden are not to be missed if you decide to site see during your golf holiday, as are the gardens, Jardin de l’Aguedal and the gardens of the famous Mamounia hotel which was converted from a palace in the 1920’s and was once used as a location for an Alfred Hitchcock film.Being a 12th century desert fortress, Marrakesh boasts an impressive array of ramparts stretching for some 19Km around the city which you can explore either by horse and carriage or by walking along its sections which gives you a chance to stop and see some of the highlights such as the souk at Bab El Khemis and the tanneries at Bab Debbarh.
