The grips on a golf club are the only part we hold onto,
obviuos statement I know but these are often neglected by
many players and really can cause your golf to go downhill if they are not maintained or renewed on a regular basis. If you don't fancy splashing out on a new set of grips just yet, simply clean them with warm soapy water and a scrubbing brush. This removes all the dirt and can prolong the life of the grips if done on a regular basis. If you choose to replace your grips make sure you go to a recognised PGA golf club repairer and he will discuss what type of grip will suit you best and then make sure that the correct size of grip if fitted to suit the size of your hands and fingers.
This may all sound a bit over the top but I can assure you that it will pay great dividends to your game and if you have it done once you will always continue to do this as the club will always feel right, in your hands.
This doesn't need to be an expensive exercise so get some advice and you'll get some grips fitted to suit your budget!
Unfortunately, contrary to popular belief, steel shafts, which are made of spring steel, are quite fragile and because they tend to rust from the inside are prone to breaking whether they are new or several years old. Check the exterior of the shaft and around the hosel of the head from time to time to see if there is any rust coming through and if so get it check out by your PGA Professional. It is worth sometimes checking the interior of the shaft when you have your clubs regripped as if there is a rust problem it can be rectified by having the clubs reshafted or renewed before they become a major problem. We don't want to see you standing in the middle of the 18th fairway with a simple 7 iron to the green and the shaft breaks causing your ball to veer off into the bunker, or worse, and you loose the monthly mug and your tenner off your mate!!
The heads on golf clubs are relatively indestructable but its worth keeping them clean, especially the grooves, as this always helps your shot making. It is worth noting that lofts & lies on the softer metal headed clubs, such as carbon steel, can alter over several games of golf, especially if you play and practice a lot, and it is worth getting these checked from time to time by a specialist PGA Professional. As is now well known, many golf companies advocate custom fit clubs and this is no exception even if the clubs are several years old.
All in all, looking after your golf clubs will help them look after you on the golf course and lead to many good games throughout the year, making your enjoyment of the game that much better!!
