Practice

Now I'm not saying that if you follow this routine before every game that your scores will come tumbling down, what I am saying is that maybe if you arrived at the club 30-45 minutes earlier, it will give you a chance to wind down, hit a few balls to get a feel for your swing and hit a few chips and putts to get the pace of the greens and you may notice that you start to save a few of those shots that you seem to waste everytime you play. This in time will hopefully build your confidence and this is the thing that is the key to any good golfers game.

Now another thing which I would like to recommend that you try and do is go to watch a couple of golf tournaments. When you go to watch a tournament most people get carried away with how far the players hit the ball and this can detract from you learning how the players plot their way around the golf course and how they play other shots so next time you go, forget how far their drives go, because as we should all realise we are not all capable of hitting 300 yard drives, so there really is not much to learn there! but watch how they position the ball in the fairway and how they play the shot into the green. Most players visualise how they are going to play the hole from the moment they step onto each tee and then they choose their clubs accordingly.

Another part of their game to watch is their chipping and pitching techniques, countless shots are wasted by club golfers in this area of their game, so why not learn something that we can all do, from these guys. You could even take a lesson from your club professional and with a little practice you will be getting up and down in 2 shots from around the greens on most occassions, thus bringing your scores down. Remember that the top players don't always hit the ball well and their short games more than often turn a pour striking round into a 68 rather than a 78! Just take a look at Seve over his playing years if you need prove of this!

The last thing that I'd like to talk about is rhythm/tempo. Everyone has their own rhythm/tempo to their golf swing, whether it be slow, brisque or hard hitting. The main thing to remember here though is to keep it under control and consistent. Our individual temperaments tend to dictate how our rhythm/tempo turn out in our golf swing so never look at it as your enemy look at it as your friend, you are stuck with this so use it to your advantage. Watching the guys practice at a tournament for a while will make you appreciate that nothing is hurried or rushed in their attempt to strike the ball, the ball simply gets in the way of the clubhead. I have always said to many male golfers that if you go and watch a ladies professional tournament, which some of them laugh at my suggestion and then realise that I was right when they finally went, you will learn so much more because the ladies don't hit the ball miles, their rhythm/tempo is incredible and their game is more inline with club golfers capabilities. So try it and see what you learn!

So remember you don't have to spend hours beating golf balls on the range but by possibly taking on board some of these tips you may, just may! lower your scores and surprise yourself at some of the great shots that you begin to hit!
