Faro, which has been known as the capital of the Algarve since 1756 and with its rich artistic heritage and many museums, is definitely worth a visit during your trip. Faro lies at the heart of the Formosa Estuary and for the Romans, who called it Ossonoba, it was an ideal place for defence and fishing during their reign. There are also many Roman ruins worth visiting at nearby Milreu.
The villages of Vale do Lobo, Salir, Barranco do Velho, Alte and Quinta do Lago are all within the Loule district close to Faro and give a perfect example of traditional Algarve building styles. Loule itself is quite fascinating as Roman remains have been found and the wall which weaves in and out of the houses probably dates back to the 10th century, when it was occupied by the Arabs.
Vila Sol will provide livelier ladies only Algarve golf breaks as it is only about a 10 minute journey to the centre of Vilamoura and its famous marina, where there are a large amount of quality restaurants and bars to choose from. Away from the golf course and the relaxing environment of Vila Sol, Vilamoura gives the opportunity to wander around a huge marina complex which has been attracting travellers from all over the world for many years. For the more adventurous, a trip out to some of the nearby towns such as Albufeira and Quarteira will give you a real modern Portuguese experience and make your trip that bit more interesting.
