Tee Times have picked Sesimbra and the golf courses of Quinta do Peru and Aroeira for its Ladies only golf breaks as the town and golf courses provide a quiet and relaxed atmosphere for your stay.
The golf courses are only a short distance from Sesimbra and provide the golfer with a tree lined and tranquil setting in which to play golf.
The town of Sesimbra was once a small fishing village and visitors will still find this evident, even though it has been enlarged over the years to cater for tourists who began to visit here in the late 1960’s.
Sesimbra lies nestled in the hollow of a small valley facing the sea to the south but it protected from the northern winds by its surrounding slopes of the Serra da Arrabida, which has made it a popular destination for Portuguese holiday makers from the north.
The town was known for its big game fishing for many years but due to the decline of Tuna and Swordfish in its nearby seas, this type of fishing has almost vanished but you can still find these fish on the speciality menu in some restaurants. Because of the quality of fish served in its restaurants, Sesimbra attracts many diners from Lisbon, who drive down at the weekends to eat in the many restaurants dotted throughout the town.
Sesimbra is made up of small narrow steep streets which lead down to its sandy beach, guarded by its 17th century fort of Sao Teodosio, which was built to protect from the Sesimbra pirates. The ruins of the 13th century castle, built by Sancho II, still stands proudly above the town on the nearby hill and even today it gives the feeling of protection as it did back then. The town was once occupied by the Romans and the Moors and this is still evident from some of the architecture today.The 15th century church of the Misericordia is worth a visit as it contains a painting of Nossa Senhora da Misericordia by the famous artist of the 1500’s, Gregorio Lopes. 250 metres above the town stands the restored five tower medieval castle, which was captured by Alfonso Henriques in 1165 from the Moors. The church of Santa Maria, which dates back to the 12th century, is housed inside the walls, and well worth a visit.
The surrounding areas of Sesimbra are worth a visit while staying in the town and just 12 km to the west you will find the flat promontory of Cabo Espichel, a wild and enchanted place which will provide magnificent views of the mouth of the River Tagus near Lisbon to the north. The weather beaten church of Nossa Senhora do Cabo, which is flanked on both sides by pilgrim’s lodges, was built in 1701 and features Baroque paintings and a fresco ceiling, is a must to see if you visit here.A short drive east of Sesimbra will bring you to the small and beautiful bay of Portinho da Arrabida, which is recognised as one of the most picturesque beach settings in Portugal.

The Tee Times Lisbon ladies only golf holiday gives our ladies a chance to explore the fascinating and wonderful city of Lisbon as well as giving them the chance to play the fabulous golf courses of Ribagolfe and Santo Estevao. The courses are all situated in one area, which is just a 30 minute drive across the Vasco da Gamma Bridge, which treats you to some wonderful views of the River Tagus during your journey.
Each course has its own unique character and will provide you with a wonderful day’s golf in quiet and friendly surroundings. Lisbon is steeped in history and during your visit Tee Times recommend mixing site seeing with your golf as you will not be disappointed.
The Tivoli Tejo is situated in the Expo area of Lisbon which gives our ladies a quiet but convenient location for their stay as it is only a 5 minute by taxi to the city centre and 10 minutes from the airport.Lisbon has attracted many visitors over the years and there are some interesting things to see or do. And with its springtime temperatures during the winter and relatively cool summers it makes for an ideal destination whatever the time of year. Lisbon has over 20 centuries of history, it was conquered from the Moors in 1147 and like many European cities it is split into several areas called quarters. The Alfama quarter is one of the oldest areas and it retains much of its original buildings which were miraculously untouched during the earthquake of 1755. The old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria are adjacent to Alfama and are set on the western and northern slopes of the hill that is crowned by St George’s Castle. Each year festivals bring the streets alive in these areas, celebrating the popular saints.The Graca quarter with its churches of Sao Vicente de Fora and Santa Engracia is well worth a visit and is only a short walk from the other areas.
Over the years Lisbon has become very cosmopolitan and many new buildings have been carefully built so as to blend in with the old. The docks area which will eventually take you to the April 25th Bridge is well worth a wander along as there are many monuments and museums of interest. It is here that you will find the Belem tower, the sentinel over the River Tagus that protects the entrance into Lisbon. You will also find Jeronimos monastery, with its masterpieces of Manueline architecture which has been classified as a UNESCO international heritage site.
You will also find the cultural centre of the Belem quarter. The city centre is always bustling with life and with its wide streets and pavements a day spent wandering around its many shops, cafes and restaurants is a day worth spent. There are many monuments and statues in its many squares and a trip up The Elevador de Santa Justa, an iron-cast outdoor lift, which opened in 1901, will give you magnificent panoramic views of the city from its top level.
